Panpsychism

I perched myself onto the sofa, laptop in my lap, ready to attempt my website for the millionth time, as I looked down at my ugly fireplace which doesn’t contain a fire just a HIFI stack and a load of Cds, I spot a strange pattern on the wall. It was only the day before that I was saying to my partner that I wanted to do something with this fireplace as I felt it was rather ugly, well someone or something was listening because a day later a beautiful geometric pattern arrived, in that exact spot. The movement and intricate detail was mesmerizing, as it changed patterns. The strangest thing of all was neither myself nor my partner could find the source of the pattern, it was like energy all of its own showing itself to me and reminding me, how beauty exists if you are conscious and awake to it. The arrival of this beautiful vision reminded me of something I had been looking into, Panpsychism.

In the philosophy of mind, panpsychism is the view that the mind or a mind like an aspect is a fundamental and ubiquitous feature of reality. It is also described as a theory that “the mind is a fundamental feature of the world which exists throughout the universe.” According to Russell Brand panpsychism is the universal consciousness that existed before humans even stepped onto planet Earth. Panpsychism is where we return when our body no longer exists. Accorded to my philosophy, it’s the energy that exists from within our consciousness, it continues its everlasting existence after the death of our bodily form, dancing and intertwining itself with all other forms of energy that exist within our universe.

I believe that the beautiful pattern I witnessed on my wall that morning was a form of Panpsychism, it was an energy form dancing and intertwining itself with other forms of energy to create a visualization that my human eye was able to see.

I will be using this inspirational photograph and the theory of Panpsychism in my art process to create a body of works, with updates to follow.
